Teh Talua: Authentic Egg Tea from Padang - The Most Powerful Traditional Drink of West Sumatra

When you visit Padang, you will find Nasi Padang and Sate Padang everywhere. But there is one secret drink that locals drink every morning to get extra energy: Teh Talua. It is also called Teh Telur, which means Egg Tea.

At first, many foreigners are shocked. Tea with egg? Yes, and it is delicious, powerful, and 100% authentic Minangkabau tradition.

What is Teh Talua?

Teh Talua is a traditional drink from West Sumatra made from hot black tea, sugar, and a duck egg yolk. The yolk is beaten until fluffy and foamy, then hot tea is poured over it. The result is a creamy, frothy tea with a rich texture like latte, but 100% natural.

In Minang language, "Talua" means egg. The authentic version must use duck egg (telur bebek) because it is bigger and more creamy than chicken egg.

Locals believe Teh Talua gives extra stamina, especially for men. That's why you will see many Teh Talua stalls open until late night around Padang.

How is Teh Talua Made?

The Authentic RecipeThe process is an art. First, the seller cracks a fresh duck egg and separates the yolk. The yolk is put in a tall glass with 2 spoons of sugar. Then he beats it vigorously with a special tool for about 2-3 minutes until it becomes pale, thick, and foamy.

Then, very hot black tea is poured from high above to create more foam. Some stalls add a little lime juice or powdered milk. The final touch is stirring gently, not too much, so you can still see the foam layer on top.

It must be served immediately while hot and foamy.

What Does Teh Talua Taste Like?

Forget the idea of raw egg smell. When beaten correctly with sugar and hot tea, there is no fishy taste at all. It tastes like creamy caramel tea, slightly sweet, with a smooth egg custard texture. The lime makes it fresh. It is warm, energizing, and surprisingly addictive.

Most foreigners who try it say: "It tastes like creme brulee tea!"

Where to Drink the Best Teh Talua in Padang?

The most famous place is Teh Talua Kubang Hayuda and stalls around Jalan Veteran and Pasar Raya Padang. Price is very cheap, only Rp15,000 - Rp25,000 (about $1 - $1.5).Best time to drink is morning or after dinner. Many locals drink it before working in the field.

Is Teh Talua Safe?

Yes, because the hot tea (around 90°C) cooks the egg yolk partially, killing bacteria. Always drink it at a crowded stall where eggs are fresh and turnover is high. Use duck eggs that are fresh, not old stock.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions about Teh Talua
