Pagang Island snorkeling - crystal clear water with clownfish and coral reef near Padang West Sumatra

If you're looking for the best snorkeling near Padang without going all the way to Mentawai, Pagang Island is your answer. Just 45 minutes from the city, this tiny tropical island offers crystal-clear water, white sand, and coral reefs that rival Bali – but with zero crowds.

Located in Pesisir Selatan, Pagang Island is often called a hidden paradise by locals. I went there last month, and here's my complete guide for you.

Why Pagang Island is Special

Unlike Pasumpahan or Pamutusan which are more crowded, Pagang is still very natural. The water visibility is 15-20 meters on a sunny day. You can see clownfish, parrotfish, and healthy coral just 2 meters from the beach. No need for a boat to snorkel!

How to Get to Pagang Island from Padang

  • From Padang to Sungai Pisang Harbor: 45-60 minutes by car/motorbike (30km). You can rent a car for Rp 400k/day or take online taxi.
  • From Sungai Pisang to Pagang Island: 20 minutes by small wooden boat (Rp 25k-35k per person return, or charter Rp 400k-600k for private boat up to 10 people).
  • Best Time to Depart: 8:00 - 9:00 AM to avoid afternoon waves.

What to Do in Pagang Island – Complete Guide

1. Snorkeling

Bring your own snorkel gear (rent in Padang Rp 50k) or rent at the island Rp 35k. Best spot is on the east side of the island – calm and full of fish. I saw 20+ Nemo fish in 30 minutes!

2. Island Hopping

Most boats offer a package: Pagang + Pasumpahan + Pamutusan for Rp 600k-800k private. Very worth it for a full day.

3. Beach & Sunset

White sand is super soft. There is a small hill (5 min hike) for sunset view over the Indian Ocean. Bring water, no shop on island.

Entrance Fee & Costs 2026 (Updated)

  • Entrance Fee: Rp 25,000 per person
  • Boat Return: Rp 25k-35k (shared) / Rp 500k private charter
  • Snorkel Rental: Rp 35,000
  • Camping: Rp 50,000 per tent (allowed, no electricity)
  • No ATM, bring cash!

Tips for Foreign Tourists

  1. Go on weekdays – weekends are full of local students.
  2. Wear reef-safe sunscreen. Coral here is still alive.
  3. Bring power bank, dry bag, and 2L water. No fresh water on island.
  4. If you can't swim well, ask boatman for life jacket (free).
  5. Best season: April – October (dry season, flat sea).

Compared to other hidden paradises in Padang, Pagang is the easiest and cheapest island to reach. Perfect for a day trip if you stay in Padang City.
